The gear that is worn.

Slide gloves |
- Helmet
- Knee pads (if skating at high speeds)
- Comfortable shoes
- Elbow pads
- Skid gloves/pads (if you are wanting to go down hill)
These are the key safety equipment that you require if you are wanting to go down hills or skate really fast. Protective gear is essential if you are longboarding at high speed.
Safety around town
Longboarding around town or busy street requires all your senses and self confidence to keep safe.
Watching out for cars, driveways and other pedestrians is very important. Making sure that you take into consideration pedestrians and other people using the footpath. You can ride on the road though it is not advised as cars and traffic, it is hard to navigate around them and people don't usually like it. Be careful when riding past houses as driveways are the common enemy of longboarders, you never know when a car may pull out of the driveway so use all your senses to watch for cars and listen to the sound of the engines.
Longboarding around town can be dangerous and I advise that you should try to avoid towns as much as possible only if the streets are not filled with traffic. Always give way to pedestrians and on coming cars.
Keep your eyes open as they are the most important sense to use as many longboarders (including myself) have fallen into a 'trance' where we feel our board moving along the smooth road and the wind blowing through us which drops our guard and accidents happen when you drop your guard. From personal experience cars have pulled out of driveways and nearly taken me out because i wasn't careful neither was the driver. My worst fear as a longboarder are driveways.
If you are on the road you are treated as a car so abide by the road rules and make sure you are able to stop quickly and slow down if need be. Since you don't have a enough protection to stop a car make sure to always let cars pass and stay to the far left side as possible so you don't solely take up the road and anger drivers. Cars should always have right of way since they are bigger than you so be polite.
